At Laetts, innovation has always been at the heart of our journey. What began with ski socks engineered for precision, comfort, and performance soon evolved into something greater. When a passionate fly fisher challenged us to create socks warm enough for standing in icy waters, we knew it was time to push the boundaries of warmth and technology.
This is the story of how Laetts expanded from the ski slopes to the fishing streams — creating socks that redefine what warmth, comfort, and durability mean in extreme outdoor environments.

The Unique Demands of Fly Fishing
Fly fishing presents an entirely different thermal challenge. Anglers spend hours standing in near-freezing water, requiring a three-layer system to maintain warmth and dryness:
- Socks – Warm, moisture-wicking layers made from Merino wool and high-tech yarns to insulate and manage odor.
- Neoprene Booties – Waterproof barriers that lock in warmth and keep out icy water.
- Wading Boots – Durable outer protection providing traction and support.
While these layers help, the cold still seeps in — especially during long periods of standing still. Traditional fly fishing socks rely on heavy terry-knit Merino construction, typically 80% wool and 20% synthetic fibers like nylon, spandex, or rubber. To make a real difference, Laetts needed something beyond tradition — a technological leap forward.
The Laetts Solution: Combining Warmth with Technology
Our solution began with HygroHeat™, the patented thermal yarn that converts body heat into far-infrared (FIR) energy. Unlike passive insulation, HygroHeat™ radiates warmth from within — a self-sustaining heat cycle that keeps anglers warm without bulk or batteries.
We paired HygroHeat™ with premium Merino wool, achieving a perfect synergy between natural and functional fibers. The result: socks that are warmer, lighter, and drier than conventional wool socks.
For the first time, we adopted full terry knitting to maximize insulation for anglers immersed in cold streams. This construction traps more air, enhances cushioning, and ensures consistent thermal protection. The result was our Heavy+ Fishing Socks — the heaviest and warmest in our lineup, weighing 210g/pair (size L).

Laetts Heavy+ Fishing Socks — engineered for anglers who brave icy creeks. Combining Merino wool and patented HygroHeat™ technology, these full-terry, 210 g socks deliver unmatched warmth, durability, and comfort for cold-water fly fishing.
Two Versions: Choice of Weight and Warmth
Recognizing that not every angler needs maximum bulk, we developed a second, lighter version. By blending Merino and HygroHeat™ fibers into a single hybrid thread, which is Heavy Fishing Socks, where we achieved balanced warmth and flexibility. This version weighs 160g/pair (size L), offering anglers a choice based on their fishing environment and layering preference.
Whether waist-deep in Montana creeks or fishing from cold riverbanks, both versions deliver dependable warmth without restricting movement — a hallmark of Laetts’ Merino Thermal System™.

Feedback from the Fly Fishing Community
By late October, both fishing models were distributed among the fly fishing community for field trials. The results exceeded expectations. Anglers consistently praised them as the warmest socks they had ever worn, citing long-lasting comfort even in freezing water.
Several testers requested a crew-length version for versatility — a design now in development and scheduled for release in the coming season. The positive feedback reaffirmed Laetts’ belief that performance innovation knows no boundaries.
Pushing Boundaries with Laetts Innovation
From snow to stream, Laetts continues to bridge technology and nature. Our fishing socks represent more than a new product — they embody the spirit of adaptive performance, proving that advanced textile engineering can thrive in any environment.
As part of our mission to deliver warmth without compromise, we’ll continue to expand the applications of HygroHeat™, BootGlide™, and the Merino Thermal System™ across new adventures and new frontiers.
